New Kpop Girl Group…”After School”

Filed under: Whatev. — sjff @ 3:38 pm

”After School”, a girl group from Son Dambi’s record label, Pladis Entertainment (or however you spell it in English), debuted on the 17th. Their debut songs “AH” and “Playgirls” will be available on the 20th.

I guess Son Dambi’s label company Pladis Entertainment’s chairman is having some brain seizures. I mean, SNSD and Kara’s out! There’s going to be too much competition for a newbie group! But whatever. Hope they can actually sing.

Kim Hyunjoong Didn’t Want To Become a Teen Idol

Kim Hyunjoong, the leader of the popular Korean boyband SS501 confessed that he didn’t want to become a teen idol, but a rocker on Jan.13th’s Sang Sang Plus.

The person who inspired him was Seo Taiji. Seo Taiji’s hit song “Ultramania” suddenly turned this middle school nerd (yes, he was smart!) into a rebellious punk. He developed antagonistic feelings toward society, and he suddenly wanted to become a rock musician. He dropped out of high school to become a musician.

But his record label didn’t want to let him become a rocker. They promised him to find a band for him, but instead they trained him to become a dancer and put him into this boyband, “SS501.”

He also covered a small part of the song “Creep” by Radiohead, one of his favorite rock songs, on the show.

My thoughts: Well, he could’ve became the hottest rocker in Korea. By the way, don’t you guys find it kind of weird that those rock-loving Korean youngsters (ex.FT Island, Hyunjoong, etc) are only into Britpop, Nu Metal and pop punk? What happened to those Korean metalheads?

By the way, Hyunjoong, nice job supporting Korea’s corporations. Right on, “punk.”

Big Bang’s Got Brains?

Filed under: Whatev. — sjff @ 11:23 pm

I’ve always had this stereotype set for the Kpop teen idols: All Kpop teen idols are AIRHEADS.

Well, if Big Bang knows how to write, then they may not be all that stupid. Especially if they can write about reaching your dreams and having confidence in yourself.

Big Bang members wrote a biography-ish book, Scream Out Yourself To The World! Big Bang members, were not not exactly the “teen-idol-materials”, but have succeeded in the music market by not giving up and pursuing their dreams passionately. “Only you can pursue your dreams and get what you want from the world. Get what you want from the world, not what they give you.”

Well yeah, only successful, young, rich celebrities can say that. 18-year-olds who are about to get shipped off to some college like me aren’t just going to throw out our high school diplomas and start rock bands or hip hop groups, ’cause we know how the world works for ordinary people.
But again, nice job guys! Hopefully some people will be inspired by the work…
