Kim Hyunjoong, the leader of the popular Korean boyband SS501 confessed that he didn’t want to become a teen idol, but a rocker on Jan.13th’s Sang Sang Plus.
The person who inspired him was Seo Taiji. Seo Taiji’s hit song “Ultramania” suddenly turned this middle school nerd (yes, he was smart!) into a rebellious punk. He developed antagonistic feelings toward society, and he suddenly wanted to become a rock musician. He dropped out of high school to become a musician.
But his record label didn’t want to let him become a rocker. They promised him to find a band for him, but instead they trained him to become a dancer and put him into this boyband, “SS501.”
He also covered a small part of the song “Creep” by Radiohead, one of his favorite rock songs, on the show.
My thoughts: Well, he could’ve became the hottest rocker in Korea. By the way, don’t you guys find it kind of weird that those rock-loving Korean youngsters (ex.FT Island, Hyunjoong, etc) are only into Britpop, Nu Metal and pop punk? What happened to those Korean metalheads?
By the way, Hyunjoong, nice job supporting Korea’s corporations. Right on, “punk.”
