Racism Against Koreans in Kpop fandom

ohmagah soo plastic!!

ohmagah soo plastic!!

If a Korean celebrity is skinny, it’s all lipo. If he has full, kissable lips, it’s all lip injection. If he has a prominent nose, it’s all nose job. If he has a pale skin, it’s all too much powder and whitening cream; if he is tan, it’s too much spray tanning. If he has creased eyelids, it’s all eyelid job. If he has an oval face, it’s all chin reconstruction. If she has big boobs, it’s all breast augmentation. If she has big butts, it’s all butt injection.

Sounds ridiculous to me. But that’s how things go in the world of Kpop fans.

With websites like AllKpop and PopSeoul, there are more Kpop fans all over the continent of Asia than ever. At first I thought, wow, since more people are listening to Korean music now, there’d be less stereotypes and discrimination against Koreans now. Wrong. Non-Korean Asian fans of Kpop, ironically, labels people of Korean decent(and that includes you and me, Americans of Korean ancestry) and Korean musicians more than ever now. They think Koreans are all plastic.

It’s true that a lot of Korean celebrities have done a job or two, but so have many non-Korean celebrities. In addition, there are many natural Korean beauties out there. However, some non-Korean fans(absolutely NOT all) have gone so far in labelling all Koreans as plastic that they create false, medically untrue rumors such as Korean babies getting plastic surgeries done at birth. Unsourced, unbelievably ridiculous claims such as more than half of people of Korean decent getting plastic surgery also exist too. Even though they claim that they can tell the difference between natural and plastic, they really can’t. Some of those douchebag fans started spreading plastic surgery rumors about an au natural Korean actree, Han Ga-In, because she had almost non-existent epicanthal folds and they thought her nose bridge “started” from the middle. However, she has a small bump on her nose and since she’s actually 1/4 Spaniard, she wouldn’t have supermassive epicanthal folds.

Most of the rumors and hatred are actually surprisingly started by often self-hating Korean-American owned Kpop websites and blogs trying to get some traffic. If you’re so eager for fame and traffic, then exchange links with other blogs and let fangirls take out your articles to AsiaFanatic.com. Well, maybe this is why we Asian Americans, especially Korean Americans are so underrepresented in the mainstream media. Oh well, even reputable magazines such as Marie Claire and Times(also done by race-hating Asian journalists) have labelled all of us as Caucasian worshippers with self-esteem issues. And you whine about that?

Nobody gives a fuck about Hangeng’s prominent nose or Nichkhun’s huge, round eyes. Maybe that’s because they are not Korean. I actually wrote an article on a forum about a couple of months ago about Kibum(Super Junior) being au natural and still looking uber-cute. All the Asians started attacking me then, stating that Koreans don’t have prominent noses and oval faces; that they were supposed to have flatter-than-flat noses and chubby round faces. What does that tell you? Racism.
See, it seems to me that those inwardly racist Kpop fans think, or even want all Koreans to have pancake-flat, chubby round faces, slanted small eyes, non-existent nose bridge, small lips, creaseless eyelids, sallow yellow skin, OBESITY, and flat chest and butts for girls. Basically, they want Koreans to look all the same and have all the bad stereotypical Asian features. I’m saying “bad” stereotypical features because they never stereotype us as having silky straight hair or smooth skin. I don’t think that’s fair. Why can all the other Asians have all the diversity they want and not be labelled as plastic?

What’s even funnier is that those racists often cry for their mommies whenever they run into a tougher racist person, for example a Nazi skinhead or a black separationist. They’d be like, “Omg, like, America is like, a totally diverse country like, now! Like omg, stop the hate and stop being so racist!! Oh my gosh!” Hmm, look who’s talking now. Let me tell you this; no other racist person I’ve met labelled all of the skinny members of the race they hated as lipo survivors. Not even Hitler.

The F4 guys

Koreans should now even be cautious about maintaining a healthy weight. Obviously, the racist Kpop douchebag fans who want them to be obese will scream “liposuction!!!” in face of any skinny or average-sized Korean they run into.

Of course, I believe that not all non-Korean Kpop fans are like this. Only some freaks are, right? Oh, come on.

Do not take out

*Please don’t get offended. I’m absolutely positively NOT saying that all Kpop fans are like this.

  1. @ sjff: yes, be positivly
because I hate people talking like that too. I never labelled K-Pop artists to have “jobs” on their body…because I never even thought about that. There are so many people loving to stereotype EVERYTHING. And man, there are more american artists having a job. Just for an example: Michael Douglas. Or Mickey Rourke. Someone wants to blame them? No? Because they are american celebrities.
I once saw a vid on youtube where a girl said Kibum had a nosejob. YES, believe me.People protested. I agree Kibum is natural. Kyuhyun had. But under the circumstances of his accident. Someone wants to blame him? Yes? WHAT THE HELL DID YOUR PARENTS TEACH YOU?
This is racism over again. What stupid K-Pop fans are out there we already know—>’Immature13′ ELF <—- but this racism is overly stupid as well.

  2. sorry but what’s a lipo n epicanthal folds?i’ve never heard of those terms b4..
plastic koreans..yeah,i admit that so many people think it’s true, maybe cause korea is the most many-plastic-celebs country in asia (but i heard the same thing about japan) i think it would be hard to change people’s mind about what they already believe esp since some K-celebs actually admit that they’ve done sum jobs (maybe its just my feeling, but i think this topic’s a little sensitive) of course i believe not all koreans (celebs or not) are plastics, body job is so expensive rite?its not like any people can just do that (n i heard that its so painful)
oh,n ive heard a funny gossip bout boa too (have u heard it?) but it was a long time ago, that she’s actually a guy n (s)he’s done a complete job from head to toe…(–speechles–)

  3. I’m never thinking bout all Korean artist or Korean who have beauty and handsome face are got plastic surgery. Like Kibum, Yesung, Sungmin, Siwon, and other artist that I couldn’t asy it all, I believe they are naturally like that, we can see it with their pre-debut n child photo. Kyuhyun did the eyelid surgery but what’s wrong with that?? at least he honest to tell it to us and not make it as a secret =) and not only korean do a job like that, a whole world can do that too LOL

    @puppylova
what? I haven’t heard that rumor bout it’s totally crazy and non-sense rumor =P

    Comment by mei an — July 4, 2009 @ 12:20 am

  4. wait..u can do plastic surgery on babies?really?they don’t even grow yet..that’s crazy…
anyway,i just read another blog about PS,it is said that there are so many korean moms got their kid’s face done (playgroup kids) so that in the future they can claimed as ‘natural’.its not true, isnt it?
@mei an: well, personally i don’t believe bout the ‘boa was a guy’ thing, but bout the eyelids n nose surgery probably true..

    Comment by puppylova — July 4, 2009 @ 12:27 pm

  5. @xKeirafanx: Haha:D I guess people are just jealous that Kibum naturally has a nose that isn’t flat. His nose isn’t perfect either; there’s like a small bump on it, and if he had plastic surgery he would’ve gotten it removed. I don’t think Kyuhyun had a nose job, but he got a surgery done on his eyelids though. Oh well, it looks pretty natural on him.

    Comment by sjff — July 4, 2009 @ 12:48 pm

  6. @puppylova: A liposuction is like a plastic surgery that people who want to get skinnier get. Basically, they’re sucking the fat out of you. Epicanthal folds are the folds on the inner corners of your eyes. I think only some Asians and A VERY SMALL number of Scandanivians have them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold#Evolutionary <-learn more about it here(don't believe everything on Wiki, but this page is pretty accurate).

Can you source that claim that Korea is the country with the highest number of plastic celebrities?

    Comment by sjff — July 4, 2009 @ 12:55 pm

  7. @mei an: Yes. Why do people think it’s okay to write shit about an ethnic group without thinking? Just because some Korean CELEBRITIES got surgeries doesn’t mean that everyone of Korean ancestry has. Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson had plastic surgery-does that mean that all Caucasian American girls are plastic? No.
I also haven’t heard that rumor yet either. I bet some perverted loser made it up. Eh…Can’t you tell that one’s transsexual by listening to their voice? Well, BoA sounds like a woman so I guess she was born female. Yeah.:P

    Comment by sjff — July 4, 2009 @ 1:11 pm

  8. @puppylova: I don’t think that’s possible. Why in the world would you have a baby get plastic surgery? That’s a retarded rumor.
Wow, another anti-Korean blog spreading shit about people with Korean ancestry. Why do people hate Korean so much anyway? If you hate Korean people that much, then what’s the point of listening to Kpop? Anyways no, that rumor is totally untrue. What kind of a crazy mother would let her 5-year-old get plastic surgery anyway? Yeah, Korean people aren’t some emotionless Martians. Sheesh.

Is BoA really? I don’t know, maybe. Anyways here are her pictures before debut: http://imagesearch.naver.com/search.naver?where=idetail&rev=5&query=%BA%B8%BE%C6%20%B0%FA%B0%C5%BB%E7%C1%F8&from=image&ac=-1&sort=0&res_fr=0&res_to=0&merge=0&spq=0&start=3&a=pho_l&f=nx&r=3&u=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.naver.com%2Fsmtowncafe%2F4502&thumbnail=http%3A%2F%2Fthumbview02.search.naver.com%2Fthumbnails%3Fq%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fcafefiles.naver.net%2Fdata23%2F2008%2F1%2F9%2F300%2F%25BA%25B8%25BE%25C6%25BE%25C6_wjdals7064.jpg&signature=709213457466&gdid=90000004_00C6EB1A0000119600000000

is it true that all snsd members took plastic surgery????

not only Korean…everyone wanna be beautiful…but for me..so many ways to be pretty,,without taking any plastic surgery…feel proud of my self..it makes me feel beautiful..LOLLL…

    Comment by YuRi — July 5, 2009 @ 11:18 pm

  10. @YuRi: You mean, U-Know Yunho from DBSK? No, I wouldn’t think so. Actually the guy at the very left in the first picture is Yunho before debut and I think he looks just the same. Yeah, he had braces I think to get his teeth straightened but that’s not a surgery. Some Yunho pre-debut pictures: http://blog.daum.net/pooding2327/554061

I don’t think ALL SNSD members had plastic surgery. Taeyeon looks just as pretty pre-debut(minus the eyebrows) and Seohyun and Yoona looks just the same. People say Jessica is plastic but I don’t think she is; I think she just got her teeth straightened. I can’t say the same thing for Tiffany and Yuri but I highly doubt that ALL SNSD members are plastic.

Haha:) It’s great that you’re confident about your looks!:)Wow, I wish there were more confident girls like you in this world.

  11. Yes, we can listen to BOA voice and its a girl voice. So the rumor was really untrue coz it didnt make any sense..
And snsd, i’m also didnt think they all are plastic. I believe taeyeon and yoona are natural, for the other i dont know bout that maybe they got some treatment for it and not have to a job =]

    Comment by Mei An — July 7, 2009 @ 3:04 am

  12. @Mei An: Seohyun’s natural too. I believe that Jessica is a natural beauty, just had her teeth straightened, but many people claim otherwise. I mean, the pictures she took with Donghae shows that her face hasn’t changed that much.
I don’t know about other SNSD members though. I think Yuri had a surgery on her eyelid(I can’t spell out the medical word for it:O).

hahaha…i hope plastic surgery will be the last choice to be pretty…^^

    Comment by YuRi — July 7, 2009 @ 8:44 am

  14. @YuRi: Hyoyeon had a nose job I think..Or is it all the makeups? You know you can alter the shape of your nose a little bit with right makeups. I don’t know about Sunny, but Tiffany and Yuri, probably. Nah, I think Jess is natural.
I think WGs are all natural, except for Hyun-ah but she’s not in the group anymore. See, Koreans are not all that plastic as other people think:)

    Comment by sjff — July 8, 2009 @ 1:02 pm

  15. @sjff: well, from what i got in other sites and urs (u have the article sumwhere), Korea is not highest in Asia, Japan, Hongkong, and Singapore are. its just about the popularity, like u already know K pop is so popular right now, so that people care a lot about Korea, including other stuff like PS, there’s no H pop or S pop so they get less attention ^^ and i think Japanese are so loyal to keep their scandals covered..

    Comment by puppylova — July 9, 2009 @ 3:19 am

  16. @puppylova: Ha thanks:) That really sorts a lot of things out.
What does CELEBRITIES getting surgeries has anything to do with NORMAL KOREAN people getting surgeries anyway? Oh yeah, and Americans of Korean ancestry also suffer from that plastic stereotype just because our great-great-grandparents were living in Korea during the early 1900’s. Ugh. Anyways, thanks!

    Comment by sjff — July 10, 2009 @ 1:40 pm

  17. Gosh, I’m late. I think a lot of people assume that all Koreans have undergone plastic surgery because there’s so much news articles written about it, even in the American news medium, and major t.v. network isn’t helping either. Did you see Oprah’s segment on Koreans doing plastic surgery? Yeah, after that segment, I’m assuming many people think Koreans are plastic. I think people have misunderstood the difference between South Koreans have the fastest growing plastic surgery rate versus Koreans have the highest rate of plastic surgery.

The only Korean celebs whom I really believe underwent plastic surgery are Hyoyeon (her nose looked really flat and wide before her debut), Yuri (from single-lid to double), two Minhos (F4 Minho and Shinee Minho), Yangpa, and Dong Wan (Shinhwa). These are the ones whom I am positive that got plastic surgery.

    Comment by hiyah — July 17, 2009 @ 7:53 pm

  18. @hiyah: Ha, yeah. The mainstream media sucks when it comes to representing Korean Americans. And it’s not only Koreans. They stereotype all the other Asians too, often making claims like we’re trying to be Caucasian or something. Seriously, do they think we’re all self-hating wannabes. Marie Claire once had an article about Asian women undergoing plastic surgery to make their legs look thinner like Caucasian womens’. As if all Asian women are fat. That sounded really ridiculous to me but a lot of people believed it.

“I think people have misunderstood the difference between South Koreans having the fastest growing plastic surgery rate versus Koreans having the highest rate of plastic surgery. ” There we go. Thank you.:D

  19. Its not racism its prejudice, but I do agree with you. A group of people won’t entirely look the same. Although there are distinctive traits that an ethic group will have. If a person is “interesting” or “unique” looking so be it…Features vary among the human race but some people are to quick to assume that they dont realize that their making an ass out of themselves. Even if they did have plastic surgery..Who cares really.. I dont its 2009. If its available ur not hurting yourself or anyone else makes you feel better why not. So I agree. Yeah some fans are freakin crazy!

    Comment by Bl00* — July 19, 2009 @ 10:19 pm

  20. @Bl00*: I don’t really see the difference between racism and prejudice; to me they’re really close synonyms, but anyways.
What I’m trying to say is why should Koreans be the ones with the stereotypically “bad” traits, when people from other ethnic groups can have squinty eyes and flat noses too(not that there’s anything wrong with having small eyes or a flat nose). Just because a person of Korean ancestry doesn’t look “Korean,” that doesn’t automatically mean that he/she is plastic.
And I agree. Who cares if one had gone under the knife. It’s not hurting anyone.

    Comment by sjff — July 20, 2009 @ 2:13 pm

  21. Isn’t it just possible people are simply JEALOUS? Like “They can’t be that pretty, they can’t.They must have something done!” Just because some celebrities have something done doesn’t mean EVERY celebrity has.
Believe it or not…there is naturell beauty out there (SuJus Kibum for example).
Why are people always discussing about it?I agree with BI00 and sjff…it’s none of our bussiness.

    Comment by xKeirafanx — July 20, 2009 @ 5:58 pm

  22. @xKeirafanx: I agree with you that people are just jealous. “OMG why does Kibum have a tall nose! That’s retarded and ever since I got beaten up by a Korean girl at my international school I’m just going to take it out on him and spread rumors!”<–I think this is how the story goes.
And who cares if someone had a surgery or not. I think we should focus on more serious businesses, like the genocide in Darfur for example, not whether Kibum's naturally good-looking or not.

    Comment by sjff — July 21, 2009 @ 7:43 am

  23. This is no racism I think you’re being over dramatic.

Even though not every korean celebrities had plastic surgery, you can’t deny the fact that they are many of them who had surgery then it is legit to have doubts on some celebrities features.

“Basically, they want Koreans to look all the same and have all the bad stereotypical Asian features”=> I think the contrary, koreans stars are going to look all the same with the plastic surgery.
They all have the same fake nose, the same eyelid sugery, or chin reconstruction.

I agree with you that some people ars stupid saying “oh koreans have flat nose …” because most of them have a tall nose naturally.

But they set a bad example with all the surgery, many young koreans are being insecure and very sensitive about their look. Many of them now (30%) consider plastic surgery, it is a fact.

And btw, saying people are just jealous is a bit childish. If you’re going to try to defend someone, at least use logic while doing so, mmylooks have nothing to do with them, but my opinion is still very much valid.

    Comment by lena — July 29, 2009 @ 9:20 am

  24. @lena: I don’t understand how this cannot be classified as racism. You don’t see as much people stereotyping every good-looking people of other nationalities as plastic, do you? It’s not like I don’t admit that there are plastic Korean celebrities out there; I do, but that doesn’t mean that your average Korean or Korean-American(why do Korean Americans have anything to do with Koreans going under the knife anyway) is plastic.

” I think the contrary, koreans stars are going to look all the same with the plastic surgery. They all have the same fake nose, the same eyelid sugery, or chin reconstruction.” I think you misunderstood me on that part. I was trying to say that Koreans can have big eyes, oval-shaped faces, etc. It’s not like people of Korean ancestry look all the same with all the same facial features and heights. We do have some diversity. I do think that the Korean beauty standard is too specific and absurd, but it’s not going to change any time soon. Entertainment management companies aren’t stupid, especially if they’re big companies like Mnet. They know the Korean beauty standard, and they’re probably going to choose looks over talents. Of course all Korean celebrities are going to look similar to one another, plastic or not.

And you can’t condemn the celebrities for younger Koreans having low self-esteem. Those people with bad self-images were the ones who chose to conform to the media’s standard of beauty. Humans are naturally drawn to good-looking people, and the media knows that good-looking people sell more. I think K-pop wouldn’t be as popular if all Korean singers were bad-looking, would it?

Well, what’s more immature? Making claims that mothers force newborns to get plastic surgery or that 90% of Korean girls are plastic, or suggesting that those people are probably just jealous? Keirafan and I never stated that those people were jealous, we were just suggesting that they could be.

    Comment by sjff — July 29, 2009 @ 1:18 pm

  25. @ all : i just wanna say that it’s their rights to take plastic surgery or not…
c’mon..everyone wanna be pretty/handsome and maybe they thought that plastic surgery was the way for getting ‘their beautiful faces’…
but we can’t judge somebody else ‘jealous’ or something just becuz she/he didn’t agree with plastic surgery…
everyone has the right to speak and comment…
racism or not it’s depending on who looks on it…

    sorry,,i just wrote what i thought…pizzzzzz ^_*

    Comment by YuRi — August 3, 2009 @ 4:50 am

  26. It is not only non Koreans who do this. It is the Korean netizens who try to invesigate on these celebrities and pull out their predebut pictures . Btw I’m sure jaejoong from dbsk had surgery. If you look at his audition tape where he is talking you can see how he has single eyelids. I’m not sure about hyoyeon though because her nose is still big like before but it’s just the lighting and makeup. She really is gorgeous in her own way unlike the typical Korean female star.

    Comment by Jenny — August 14, 2009 @ 5:27 am

  27. @Jenny: Yes, some pathetic Koreans do this, but they do not label all Koreans as plastic by posting their supposedly pre-debut pictures on the web. It’s the non-Koreans who try to stereotype all Koreans as plastic Caucasian-wannabes. Anyways, I’ve already seen his pre-debut video, but the generally accepted theory is that he got them as he got older. Some people get eyelid creases as they get older and lose baby fat. I do agree that Hyoyeon is pretty. I don’t know why some people make fun of her and call her “Hyork.”

    Comment by sjff — August 15, 2009 @ 6:04 pm

  28. The reason why there is so much hatred against Koreans is very simple. Other Asians are jealous and furious that their entertainment industry in their respective countries are not as popular and widely known as the Korean entertainment. Asians, in general, have chip on their shoulders since they want the global power back from the Mongol Empire Era, but overshadowed by the Western Power. Asians realize that Korean stars are becoming too famous, too popular both in Asian countries and Western countries. Have you noticed all the Korean (also Korean-American) stars are playing the sought-after roles in America too, the #1 entertainment market? No wonder, we have jealous Asian fans.

Most importantly though is that there is also internet trolls who disguise themselves as someone else to create tension. I have discovered on many occasions, whites pretend to be of another race and talk crap about Koreans. Now, let’s try to figure out why. First, whites want Asians to hate on one another. The theory of Divide and Conquer. Second, Asians have the global power back and whites are jealous of that fact. Third, whites continue to believe America is “their” land and furious to see Asians (especially men) to be represented as desirable race. We all know how Hollywood tried so hard to make sure Asian men are portrayed as the “undesirable” so Asian women would fall for white men. Majority of the Asian women didn’t fall for that crap. You have white men and white women making false accusations of Koreans being all plastic so whites can claim they are the superior race. But if you look at all the statistics, it’s the whites who have the most plastic surgery in the world! They even go far as implanting silicones inside their buttocks!! Whites don’t want other races to know that their appearances are plastic but will be the first in line to make false accusations that Koreans look attractive because of the surgery. It’s hurting the whites to let another race, such as Koreans, to be better looking and will go to any length to falsely accuse the Koreans of having artificial looks.

It’s back to the high school days where all the popular, good-looking girls & guys were the targets of hatred and false rumors. People who were spreading false rumors were wannabe’s who hated themselves for not being as good-looking as the popular kids. With that being said, take Korean-bashing as a medium for these self-hating high school wannabe’s who are boiling with jealousy and hatred. After all, those emotions are not healthy for them and they will eventually die off in miserable state. How pathetic and sad…

i ever read article about japan korean plastic stars,
but unfortunately, in the end, they mention that country with the biggest number of plastic surgery is USA..
they even held a tv program like SWAN..

  30. Truly out of all the East Asians (CJK), Koreans seem to be the most preoccupied with appearances which truly reflects them having self-esteem issues. “Plastic” stereotyping is not without merit when you been around them long enough.

In fact, here’s an example just experienced by my mom a couple of weeks ago. She was staying at this hospital where all her nurses were Caucasians or Filipinos, so when she went to the nurses station to ask about something and saw an Asian girl, she was very happy since my mom’s English is not that fluent. In all innocence and with no malice, she asked the nurse if she was Chinese, hoping she was. Now, mind you my mom ASKED, not assumed, so the forthcoming attitudes and responses she received from this Asian girl was a shock.
Firstn this said girl raises her name badge and said nastily, “does my name look Chinese to you”? (I’m not going to write the name, but actually yes it did). Then…NOW HERE’S THE REAL KICKER…she took her fingers and slanted her own already slanted slit eyes and asked even more nastily, “do my eyes look chinky to you”? : O
Wow! Needless to say, my mom was shocked, not only the fact that it would be highly unacceptable for any professional to pull that kind of act in such an environment but from a fellow East Asian?
What she related to my next just made me laugh though because my mom did take a good look at the nurse and flatly said, “yeah you do, you more than me!!!”, “you DO have eyes like THAT”!
The Korean girl had nothing to say to that because my mom’s eyes are actually her best features. Even though she’s older now, her eyes are still naturally big with NO epicanthal folds (certainly larger than most Korean’s), and now here’s this Asian girl trying make fun of a fellow Asian using the stereotypical slit-eyed, racist gesture that Caucasians often use when her own eyes really ARE like that. Apparently this Korean nurse hates to look at herself in the mirror? ROFLMAO.

You know if that is typical of the mindset of many Koreans, it just makes one wonder just how deep are their issues with self-esteem? Because for all the “Korea is NO.1″ attitudes (yeah believe me I’ve met many, grandmas and all), Korean’s inferiority complexes shows and shows strongly. Tons of applied make-up (seen so many in Seoul) and the reputation for having the most plastic surgery just re-inforces it. So yeah despite trying promote Korean might through Kdrama and Kpop, the insecurities scream loud and clear, especially noticeable to us Chinese. :/
Taking the example of that Korean nurse, talk about delusions and self-hate!

    Comment by Jane — December 4, 2009 @ 4:36 am

  31. @naa: Seems like you live in a country where most people are very open-minded! Which country do you live in?:)
Haha, yeah, same here. To be honest, I couldn’t care less what people decide to do with their own faces. Hey, it’s none of my business.

@Jane: Way to generalize a whole ethnic group based on one person. I’m truly sorry that the Korean nurse was being nasty to your mother and I also think that her comeback was hilarious. Nevertheless, that does not prove your point that all Koreans have self-esteem issues. I’ve lived in Korea and I visit there every year or so, and I don’t think Korean women wear a lot of makeup in general. I did see some with 5 lbs of makeup caked on their faces, but there were also many whom were fresh-faced and natural. And I think it’s a little bit judgemental to say that all women who wear a lot of makeup have low self-esteem. Do all “emo” and “scene” kids have self-esteem issues? Apparently not. Korea is not the country with the highest rate of plastic surgery, by the way. I’m against any form of nationalism by the way, but I don’t believe that Korea is the only country where nationalism prevails. I am not trying to offend the Chinese, but with books such as “China’s Not Happy” selling out like crazy, I would say that nationalism is growing in China as well. Same goes for Japan.

And last of all, I don’t understand where your coming from? I wrote this to prove that it is racist for Kpop fans to say that all Korean celebrities are plastic when they’re not, just based on the fact that they are Korean. Then you commented on here about the supposed self-esteem issues you think all Koreans have. I don’t see the correlation between the two.

  32. ^ Poster above is wrong…Paris Hilton hasn’t had plastic surgery. If so she wouldn’t have the nose or jaw that she does…. Pamela Anderson definitely did… Ashlee Simpson did…um… No more come to mind.
But any country where there’s a city with a high population, and the notion when living there is to be aesthetically pleasing, you’re going to find a lot of plastic surgery. Thus, a lot of people who have had plastic surgery within Seoul, L.A., Las Vegas, etc.
Now does that mean people in these cities are automatically all plastic? Why of course not. But its hard to not be skeptical whether or not they’re fake or real.

  33. @mango: Well, what happened to Paris’s boobs, then? I’m not saying that she’s plastic, but I really want to know how her boobs doubled their sizes just out of nowhere. And it is generally considered not acceptable to say that all or most New Yorkers are plastic, so why should it be different for the people of Seoul? And my question is, even if all Koreans were plastic (which they are not), why should we even care? They’re minding their own business, I think we should as well.

Okay, why do people keep commenting here about how they think normal Koreans are plastic and whatnot. Apparently, I wrote about those so-called “Kpop fans” calling every celebrity in the Korean entertainment industry plastic. Y’all seriously, read the post!
