So Americans Can’t Like Super Junior?

Don’t Don’ was amazing, minus the faux-anarchist lyrics of Don’t Don’ and the corny, Shinhwa-during-the-90’s-esque sound of Missin’ U. But blond Hangeng? Fake tattoos on Sungmin? *faints*

You can't beat this!

You can't beat this!

I should add that picture to my “Hot Blond Asian Guys” article.

Anyways, I was on Youtube as usual, watching old Super Junior videos when I spotted comments saying that Americans don’t understand Asian music because our mentality isn’t compatiable with the Asian counterpart.
I was offended as hell but I didn’t say anything. Just because I was being nice and I didn’t want to hurt feelings of innocent Asian schoolgirls who don’t have the evil American mentality.

First of all, what is the American mentality? Americans come in various forms and sizes. There are Americans who religiously follow Karl Marx’s teachings and there are Americans whose one and only interest is to get the hottest couture from Neiman Marcus. Our culture is a rich blend of cultures from all over the world, which makes it harder to define and generalize what lies in Americans’ hearts.

There is no “Asian mentality” anyway. Asians also come in all forms and sizes, and there is a big difference between an average South Korean and an average Khmer. Heck, Indians and Pakistanis are also considered Asians, and I’m sure as hell that Indian culture is very different from Korean culture. There are Asians who reject mass produced Asian music, aka *cough cough* Super Junior. They must be infected with the evil American mentality now, aren’t they?

Oh well. I’m going to shut up here. I’m an evil American so I shouldn’t like Super Junior. Why am I listening to Love Disease anyway. I should go ahead and turn on some Lady GaGa.

  1. oh well….should I go then and listen to Tokio Hotel?
It’s like that in Germany too…everytime when I tell people that I listen to korean and chinese music they are like:
“How can you hear that, you don’t even understand any word of it!”
“What japanese music?” _< (Kibum and Shindong)

  2. @xKeirafanx: I know, it’s so annoying that people don’t understand that there are open-minded people out there. I’m not saying that people who don’t listen to international music are close-minded. But when they criticize us for listening to different music, then they need to chill.
I don’t like American boybands(no offense Jonas Brothers fans). I like our rock bands, esp. punk rock bands but Miley Cyrus? Ehh..Nope.
Well, I was on Youtube and some Asian fans of Super Junior(I guess they were immigrants) were saying crap about my country and things like how Americans are all close-minded and racist against Asian artists. Yeah, I was pretty offended:/

  6. @Mei An: Ha, mantra?:D LMAO
Well, this post was supposed to criticize those innocent Asian schoolgirls who bashed Americans for not liking Asian music, but many of you took it the other way…Oh well..:/

  7. @cassandra: Ha:D Whoa you’ve been a Kpop fan since 2004? Whoa whoa whoa.
    And yeah Sungmin’s HOT!!!:)

Well, the original intention of this article was to criticize those Asian chicks who bashed me and other Americans for not liking Asian music…Not Americans who don’t understand me. Most Americans I know don’t care what I listen to. Seemed like some of you didn’t get it:)

  9. There is always a generalisation of a community, in this case Americans and Asians.
You cant expect people to fully understand you… Stop bashing people because you too, should be bashed in the same way as you are bashing others.
“Asian chicks” so totally screams “I’m a saint/diva who’s trying not to hurt innocent Asian schoolgirls” ?!
I have my own opinions about the issue but you wailing because someone bashed you (and you, in turn bashed the “community” that girl belongs to…) is totally jarring on my ears.
Get real, you’re the one who doesn’t accept “Asian mentality” or “American mindset”. I say you belong no where.

    Comment by zorro — July 7, 2009 @ 12:16 pm

  10. @zorro: When did I bash people? Wow, where’d you get that from? Bashing the community? I have never bashed the Asian people as a whole, nor the Asian community. Read the article, not just skim over it. Nobody has made a personal attack on me either. There were these people bashing on us Americans as a whole because some jerks at their school didn’t appreciate Sorry Sorry though. What I find funny is that you apparently criticize me for “bashing on the Asian community that girl(by the way, there were multiple people complaining, not just one) belongs to” but not the people who bashed on every Americans in the world. I was defending Americans in the article above. And I say there’s nothing wrong with defending citizens of your country.

“Get real, you’re the one who doesn’t accept “Asian mentality” or “American mindset”. I say you belong no where.” Sorry, but this statement of yours doesn’t make much sense. You’re criticizing me for bashing on the girls and now you’re suddenly criticizing me for not accepting “Asian mentality” and whatnot? Wow. Just wow.

  11. “I should add that picture to my “Hot Blond Asian Guys” article”.—PLEASE DO SO

“what is the American mentality? || There is no “Asian mentality””

it’s really annoying when people are not open minded and they just don’t understand where u are coming from. there’s more diversity in the world and music and language is something that highlights it

i’m cambodian and i listen to kpop. at first people asked the typical questions and did the typical remarks “do u even understand what they are saying?…etc…then i got tired of it and responded back with ” of course i understand it, i’m learning korean and also in the kpop club and watch korean varietys”…problem solved.

i not going to give up kpop just because it not normal at first for the people around me. i doing it for me cause i enjoy good music with people who can actually perform.

i go by MY OWN MENTALITY

  12. I don’t think she’s complaining that Americans don’t understand her music taste..I think she’s trying to break the “mean, close-minded” stereotype on Americans. People think Americans don’t listen to Korean music but we do(I’m half Japanese half Caucasian-American).
Anyways, Sungmin looks hot in that picture. But I agree that Don’t Don’s lyrics sucked(no offense?). It made them sound like some Sum41-kind of pseudo punk, trying to sound all anti-establishment when they actually are conforming to the capitalist system. There’s no American/Asian mindset. People think all differently. I myself would empathize more with a sub-Saharan African punk than a conservative Eurasian free-trade supporter. Does that make me an African-no.

  13. @jp_bbivip_x: There we go!
“it’s really annoying when people are not open minded and they just don’t understand where u are coming from. there’s more diversity in the world and music and language is something that highlights it” Thanks for clarifying!:)
And I, too, go by my own mentality. I don’t think the way people tell me to think just b/c of my nationality.

  14. @Jen: “I don’t think she’s complaining that Americans don’t understand her music taste..I think she’s trying to break the “mean, close-minded” stereotype on Americans. People think Americans don’t listen to Korean music but we do” THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CLARIFYING.
Haha:D Don’t Don’ lyrics weren’t all that bad though. I was listening to it the other day though and thought it was pretty ironical because they’re signed to like the 2nd biggest label in Korea. Oh well. We can’t expect punk ethics out of Super Junior; they were never punk anyway. I’ll stick to The Exploited when it comes to punk stuffs:)

    “There’s no American/Asian mindset.” Couldn’t agree more.

  15. They can always TRY to understand the song right???You can always find their song WITH eng sub on youtube…You could al least make an effort to understand their song….I’m not from Korea but I think Korean song is the best….I love the songs in my countries too though…

    Comment by izz17 — July 20, 2009 @ 7:39 am

  16. @izz17: I don’t think you completely got the point of the post:) I was trying to say that there are American Kpop fans out here and that we’re completely capable of liking foreign music. I’m an American of Korean ancestry so I understand SJ songs with no problem, even though sometimes Donghae has this Southwestern accent that makes his part harder to understand..
But thanks for the suggestion! What country are you from btw?
