Eunhyuk actually comes from the royal family, no joke.
I was so bored that I did some research on Super Junior members’ family clans, and came up with some surprising results. Who knew that Eunhyuk, and Heechul too, were actually descendants of old kings?

HRH Prince Eunhyuk
Before we go on, understand that only the noblepeople(yangban) could have last names in Korea before Japanese colonization. When Japan colonized Korea, they gave last names to peasants and slaves, and let them choose whichever last name they desired. Most people who belonged to the lower class chose Kim, Lee, or Park as their last names and faked family trees so that they could pass as noblepeople. A lot of slaves chose the last name of their noble masters. 70~90% of Koreans who claim that they have noble blood in them actually don’t.
Anyways, I’m making a dangerous assumption here that all Super Junior members’ ancestors were real nobles. Most SJ members except Hangeng apparently come from famous noble family clans.
How to read the name of a family clan:
Andong(the bon-gwan of the family clan) Kim(the last name)
This tells us that just because Ryeowook and Heechul are both Kims, that doesn’t mean that they are related.

Leeteuk(Park Jungsoo)- Miryang Park
Ah, the second biggest family clan in Korea. I mean, don’t ask me how many peasants and slaves faked their genealogy back then when Japan colonized Korea. Anyways, if Leeteuk really is a part of this clan, he’s a great-great-great-greatx43850 grandson of Hyeogeose of Silla. So he has a 1/1000000000 drop of royal blood in him; awesome. Micky Yoochun also comes from this family.

part Indian?
Heechul(Kim Heechul), Yesung(Kim Jongwoon), and Kibum(Kim Kibum)- Gimhae Kim
There are so many Gimhae Kims I know, it’s not even funny. Established by King Kim Suro, the first king of Geumgwan Gaya, a part of the Gaya Confederacy(an old kingdom that once existed in the southeastern part of the Korean penninsula), this is the biggest family clan in Korea. Anyways, this proves that the three have some exotic blood in them; in folktale, King Kim Suro married an Indian princess from Ayodhya(don’t ask me how she got there).

His Royal Highness Prince Eunhyuk
Eunhyuk(Lee Hyukjae), Sungmin(Lee Sungmin), and Donghae(Lee Donghae)- Jeonju Lee(the Royal Family!)
Apparently all the Lees of Super Junior come from the last royal family of Korea. Eunhyuk’s the only one that I’m sure that belongs to the Jeonju Lee clan though. He’s the descendant of Prince Hyoryeong, the intelligent, religious older brother of King Sejong(could that explain why Eunhyuk’s smart and rumored to be religious?) As for other members, I’m not so sure. I have a feeling that a lot of people who claim that they’re part of this clan really have no drop of royal blood in them.

Kangin(Kim Youngwoon)- Seongsan Kim
I bet this is one of the smallest Korean clans. There’s literally no information about Kangin’s family clan. If you have any information, leave me a comment with a link or something.

Kyuhyun(Cho Kyuhyun)- Changnyeong Cho
A lot of famous scholars and Korean Nationalists have belonged to this clan. The first Korean family clan ever to use the last name “Cho,” which was actually given to the progenitor of the clan by a king of Silla. Some Changnyeong Chos I know claim that they’re related to Queen Seon Duk(watch the drama ‘cuz it’s awesome!), but the real progenitor of the clan I think is a son-in-law of King Jinpyeong (Queen Seon Duk’s father).

Totally Korean!
Siwon(Choi Siwon)- Jeonju Choi
Not to confuse you, but his family isn’t the same as the Jeonju Lee family. The two families might’ve been established at the same region or something, but they’re NOT the same clan. Anyways, Siwon belongs to one of the oldest family clans in Korea- he should be proud of that.

Shindong(Shin Donghee)- Pyeongsan Shin
Um..well, he’s a descendant of a famous general who helped Emperor Wang Gun establish Goryeo Dynasty. His bon-gwan’s actually at North Korea, wow.
Identifying which family clan you belong to is not as important as it used to be, although individuals still take a lot of pride in his/her clan. It’s the 21st century and all of this stuff is just for fun:)
I have no information on Hangeng currently. If you have any information about his genealogy, let me know.

Do not take out!

All of this stuff can be pretty confusing since you kind of have to know the Korean history to understand this. If you have any questions, then just leave me a comment:)
whaha! i love this. super junior come frm a rich family. i didn’t know that.

^^ and you’re sure about that?
well…I have somewhere deep away a century ago someone with noble blood, but I don’t give a damn about it…coming from a noble family is a joke for most german people. Looking at our aristocracy is enough to make you laugh for hours. We have drunken lords, poor lords with nothing but their title and some dutch marrying for the fifth time, no one takes them really serious and nobody in Germany would really be proud about having noble blood.
I’m not sure if I could believe this, sorry. I mean, we all know Siwon has very rich parents. But noble blood? I don’t know that much about korean history THOUGH I find it extremely interesting. I love history.
But you found this in the net, right? How safe is it? It would be really funny if this is true…oh yes, I would have fun calling Eunhyuk ‘your majesty’ all the time.
It might be possible…and it sounds good….you said Micky Yoochun has noble blood too…so you checked other K-Pop artists too? How was that outcome? Would be pretty interesting.
Well I didn’t want to put your work down, you must’ve spent hours on this. So well, thanks for this interesting view on them. I’m not making fun of you, it’s interesting ^^

@stalker93: It’s even confusing for me and history is the only subject I’m good at:) Haha:)
@xKeirafanx: I don’t believe that all of them have noble blood in them. I think I’ve stated this earlier, but 70%~90% of Koreans who claim that they have blue blood in them really don’t.
And well, Korea is different from Germany when it comes to aristocrats. There are no aristocrats or kings in Korea anymore. Joseon Dynasty fell about 100 years ago(Japanese colonization), and Korea has been a democratic country following its independence after WW2. People just talk about their “noble” family clans and have a lot of pride in them, but belonging to a noble family clan really doesn’t mean anything in the modern society. You don’t get benefits or anything. And a lot of people faked their family histories too, so yeah..
And some of the information I’ve gathered up on webs, but I checked with each family clan’s “Jong-chin-hweh”s(kind of like the central office of a family clan that organizes family trees and stuffs) too. It’s all just for fun anyway:)

Comment by sjff — July 15, 2009 @ 2:07 pm
@jereca213: Whoa, that’s strange, since I think European history is just purely amazing. Oh, and I’m American:)
Comment by sjff — July 15, 2009 @ 2:17 pm
@mei an: It’s pretty confusing for non-Koreans:) I say this whole family thing lies at the core of the Korean culture so it’s kind of hard to understand. I should’ve made it sound less complicated:) Thanks for the compliment anyway

Comment by misskania — July 16, 2009 @ 7:56 am
@misskaina: I’ve checked with each family clan’s “jong-chin-hweh” on the family history stuff and such. These guys are already pretty famous among their clan members(even though nobody’s really sure whether they really belong to the specified clans up there; I’m pretty sure on Eunhyuk though).
Aww thanks for the compliment:) People like you keep me going!
Comment by sjff — July 16, 2009 @ 2:47 pm
@jereca213: Nah, hardly famous among non-Korean Americans. But we still have non-Korean Americans here who love them:) I think Super Junior T once visited America for the Hollywood Bowl thing.

This article has really inspired me! Geneology and stuff has always interested me, and now i wanna know what clan my mom’s side is from~~
For whatever reason my family is hard to look up and is all mysterious, I think its because on my dads side my great-great grandpa came here penniless from Poland all by himself, and my other great grandparents came here at like age 17 from Ireland… But i want to know my Korean ancestry now! I have asked my mom about it and she doesnt know… Can you tell me your sources, and how/where to find this stuff out? Thanks so much :D
^_^ Bye

@Saabs: Aww you’re back!:) Thanks for the compliment!
Your dad’s side of the family sounds really interesting btw:)
Well, I found out about my clan because my grandfather used to live in the main house of the clan(jong-gah). What’s your mom’s Korean maiden name?
Comment by sjff — July 18, 2009 @ 10:18 am
@cassandra: Not super duper Bill-Gates rich I guess, but rich enough, if you get what I’m saying:) Doesn’t he live in the rich part of Kangnam? I don’t think Heechul’s from a rich family though. If he were rich, then he wouldn’t have taken weird part time jobs when he first came to Seoul to audition.
I LOVE 2pm, DBSK, and Big Bang!!!!!!!!:) Esp Nichkhun, Yunho, and TOP!!!!:)

My mom’s maiden name is Im… I know that thats a relatively uncommon name…
Haha, and dont mention it! (about the compliment, i mean :P) Your blog is great! I learn a lot of stuff from it.
:] bye!
Comment by Saabs — July 19, 2009 @ 2:44 pm
@Saabs: Thanks for the compliment!
Hmm..I think your mom would either be a Naju Im or a Pyeongtaek Im. Most Ims belong to either of the two clans. Pretty interesting, I just found out that your mother’s maiden name can be traced back to 1,000 B.C!! That’s a pretty rich family history, isn’t it?:)
Comment by sjff — July 19, 2009 @ 3:09 pm
